DIRECTED researcher Holly Faulkner (University College Cork) organised a workshop exploring Multi-Criteria Decision-Making as a Decision-Support Tool for Building Disaster Resilience: Role-Play Exercise in Roskilde Fjord, Denmark at the Network of European Emergency and Disaster Studies (NEEDS) 2026 conference Societal Resilience in Times of Cascading Crises and Disasters, held at the Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania from 28-30th April. This workshop was co-facilitated with Dug Cubie (University College Cork) and New Zealand colleague Toni Collins (University of Canterbury), and co-developed with DIRECTED partners Kaija Jumppanen Andersen (Technical University of Denmark), Martin Drews (Technical University of Denmark), Samuel Juhel (ETH Zurich) and Natascha Ng (SEI Oxford).

This workshop brought together academics, researchers and practitioners from across Europe, the US and New Zealand to exchange knowledge and experience around long-term planning for climate change adaptation and disaster risk management. It also provided an opportunity for them to explore and apply a multi-criteria analysis to a specific case study.

Participants were assigned a role and in groups worked with flood maps generated for an extreme pluvial event in Frederikssund, Roskilde (Denmark). The session then went through key steps of the multi-criteria analysis process including exploring priorities and values, building a goals hierarchy and exploring solutions.

This workshop built upon a previous DIRECTED workshop held in December 2025, which engaged key Danish stakeholders in undertaking multi-criteria analysis for long-term climate change adaptation planning.

These workshops are being integrated into DIRECTED’s eLearning platform on WeAdapt, which will include the resources developed to run a multi-criteria analysis workshop.
