Training for impact: Learning exchange on extreme flooding in Rimini using interoperable tools and governance frameworks

ECCA2025_Training_for_Impact

Wednesday 18th June 2025 | 9:00 – 11:00 | Room Orologio

If you manage disaster response or support long-term planning and need to consider climate risks, this event is for you! Come share your experiences and learn from others in a hands-on learning exchange focused on early warning, disaster preparedness, and climate adaptation, using the case of extreme flooding in Rimini, Italy. These scenarios will also be used to collaboratively explore preparedness for future events, which are exacerbated by climate change

As part of the DIRECTED Project, the Emilia-Romagna Regional Civil Protection Agency, the Regional Agency for Prevention, Environment and Energy (Arpae), GECOSistema and other stakeholders in the Real World Lab are co-designing the DIRECTED Data Fabric – a platform designed to improve interoperability in climate/disaster risk management. This includes real-time data sharing, nowcasting, and forecasting for river and coastal floods.

Video: Emilia-Romagna Flood and Storm Surge Simulation Training for Emergency Response, June 2024

In this session, participants will use the prototype Data Fabric to prepare for an extreme climate event in the future in an immersive exercise, which integrates weather datasets with advanced flood modelling tools such as SaferPlaces. The exercise will be guided by the RiskTandem Framework, which bridges risk governance and knowledge co-production to support integrated disaster risk management (DRM) and climate change adaptation (CCA).

Max Steinhausen, the DIRECTED Project Coordinator and session convenor, said:

„Climate change is accelerating, with 2024 marking the first year global temperatures surpassed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, underscoring the urgent need to prepare for more frequent and intense climate extremes. This training workshop brings together disaster management and climate adaptation professionals to learn from Rimini, Italy’s Civil Protection experience, exploring co-designed tools that enhance preparedness, response, and adaptation to extreme rainfall and coastal flooding.“

Together, we’ll discuss key questions:

  • How can tools like the Data Fabric better support decision-makers and vulnerable communities?
  • What skills are needed to improve integration of data, models, communication, and governance in DRM and CCA?
  • How can an open-access eLearning training courses support your work?

Your insights will help shape future training for DRM and CCA professionals!

DIRECTED will also have a stand at the conference so come along to see our tool demonstrations at the stand including SaferPlaces, the Data Fabric and our new VR flood safety experience.
